The Kingston Public Library is hosting Abdi Nor Iftin in our Fall Author Talks series. Please share this information anywhere you deem fit. It’s free and open to all.
Abdi Nor Iftin first fell in love with America from afar. As a child, he learned English by listening to American pop and watching action films starring Arnold Schwarzenegger and when U.S. marines landed in Mogadishu to take on the warlords, Abdi cheered for their arrival. They seemed as heroic as those of the movies. Sporting American clothes and dance moves, he became known around Mogadishu as Abdi American, but when the radical Islamist group al-Shabaab rose to power in 2006, it became dangerous to celebrate Western culture.
Abdi Nor Iftin is now a proud resident of Maine and on the path to citizenship. As a former refugee, a recent immigrant to the US and a Muslim, Abdi has received requests to speak at TEDx events, Universities and colleges in Maine.
